Firefighters today remained at the scene hours after the first report of an early-morning fire at a San Mateo wine and gift shop, where no injuries were reported but more than 200 cases of wine were destroyed.
First responders summoned more resources to aid the fight less than an hour after they first arrived at The Wine Globe, at 43rd Avenue and South El Camino Real, after the blaze was first reported at 6:26 a.m.
The fire, which began on the first floor of the two-story commercial building, also heavily damaged an upstairs mezzanine, according to Brian Kelly, chief information officer for the San Mateo Fire Department.
He estimated $400,000 in losses to the building but could not put a dollar value on the lost alcohol, which included more than 200 cases of wine and also bottles of liquor. No injuries were reported.
``It was a good-size shop,'' Kelly said. ``There were a lot of bottles inside.''
Firefighters used saws to cut into walls to get at flames that were burning deep into interior walls. Kelly said the building appears structurally intact, despite the extensive damage.
``It will take some extensive rehabilitation, but it's not a total loss,'' Kelly said. ``We're also glad the fire did not spread to adjoining buildings.''
